One of the richest areas of marine diversity in the world, Lembeh Strait is now a popular dive destination for lovers of all critters great and small! Along the strait's 12 kilometers are packed an uncountable number of rare critters : octopuses, frogfishes, shrimps, nudibranches and seahorses -- at more than 40 dive sites between the mainland of North Sulawesi and Lembeh Island.
But this colorful, pristine environment is also home to smaller but no-less-spectacular creatures nestled in the sand or among the coral flowers. LEMBEH STRAIT is a MUST for MUCK-DIVING LOVERS!
Dive at Wakatobi Island
Wakatobi National Park has potential marine natural resources that are both valuable and unique species, with stunning underwater panorama. This amazing place is worth to visit among travel destinations in Indonesia. The location is precisely at Banda Sea, Southeast Sulawesi (Celebes).
When doing scuba diving we’ll see that the sea bottom is flat and slope, but there are some areas that steeply sloping. Water depth varies, the deepest reaches 1044 meters with a sandy and rocky bottom.
This national park has 25 clusters of coral reefs spreading around the atoll along 600 km. It consists of more than 112 species from 13 families of corals including Acropora formosa, A. Hyacinthus, Psammocora profundasafla, Pavona cactus, Leptoseris yabei, Fungia molucensis, Lobophyllia robusta, Merulina ampliata, Platygyra versifora, Euphyllia glabrescens, Tubastraea frondes, Stylophora pistillata, Sarcophyton throchelliophorum, and Sinularia spp. The collection has made it as a place for research and beautiful recreational diving.
Wakatobi National Park owns fish species richness as many as 93 species. The locals use fishes for consumption and sell them as ornamental fishes such as spotted argus (Cephalopholus argus), takhasang (naso unicornis), pogo-pogo (Balistoides viridescens), napoleon (Cheilinus undulatus), red fish (Lutjanus biguttatus ), baronang (Siganus guttatus), Amphiprion melanopus, Chaetodon specullum, Chelmon rostratus, Heniochus acuminatus, Lutjanus monostigma, Caesio caerularea, and many more.
In addition, there are several types of sea birds such as brown geese (Sula leucogaster plotus), cerek melayu (Charadrius peronii), raja udang erasia (Alcedo atthis); also there are three common types of sea turtles that land on the islands like Eretmochelys imbricata, Caretta caretta, and Lepidochelys olivacea.
Dive at Togian Island
From April to October, the cruises are located in the Togian Islands, inside the large Tomini Bay. The Togians include 3 main volcanic islands close together, and another one apart on the North that erupted last in 1984, as well as numerous islets. It is the only place in the world where barrier reefs, atolls, and fringing reefs are found together. Most of the islands is still covered by dense tropical forest, human settlements and tourism are still very limited.
The Togian islands dives specificity is certainly the beauty and the diversity of the underwater sceneries their offer, with a visibility that is generally very good.
Around the volcanic island of Una-Una, where we stay for 3 days, sponges size and shape diversity are astonishing, probably among the biggest in the world. The fish life is very dense: schools of jacks and barracudas, Bump head parrotfish's, numerous napoleon wrasses, snappers, fusiliers, etc.
Other dive sites include beautiful drop offs with crevasses and overhangs, canyons, rocks formations, pinnacles, all offering a great variety of spectacular underwater sceneries.
Pelagic life is present on some of the spots with schools of barracudas, tunas, giant trevallies, eagle rays, reef sharks and sometimes hammerhead sharks.
The development and the diversity of coral formations are also a highlight of the Togian islands. The cruise also includes a visit to an intact plane wreck B24 from the 2nd World War laying on the bottom at eighteen meters depth.
Dive at Derawan Island
As far as diving goes, there are few places in the world that offer more than one major attraction. Sipadan is famous for its turtles, Yap for its mantas and Palau for its Jellyfish Lake. But imagine what it would be like if you could go to a place that offers it all. Impossible, you say! Well, my response to that would be Derawan.
On the northeast coast of Kalimantan, Indonesia, lies a small tropical island called Derawan, which has access to Mantas, turtles and a jellyfish lake, as well as some excellent cave, wall and pier dives. Add to this a dive resort surrounded by white sand beaches with crystal clear water, and you have the recipe for a perfect dive holiday.
The diving from Derawan is shared between three islands, Derawan, Sangalaki and Kakaban, and on occasions, when the conditions are suitable, Maratua Island is also visited. A typical day´s diving would consist of two boat dives at Sangalaki or Kakaban Island (with lunch), followed by a third dive at Derawan to finish the day. A night dive on the Derawan Resort pier is also an option, however, most people prefer an early dinner, so that they can watch the Green and Hawksbill Turtles make their way up the beach after dark to lay their eggs.
The types of diving available at Derawan Island are diverse, ranging from spectacular wall dives to wreck and shore dives. There is an incredible diversity of small marine life in the shallows, as well as an ever dominant presence of turtles cruising the reef edge in deeper water. Of the many dive sites available at Derawan, a few really stand out in my mind. The shallow sand and sea grass covered areas of the Derawan pier were the highlight of my stay there. I found creatures such as the Marbled Snake Eel and Diamond Filefish in just seven feet of water, directly under the dive shop, and in deeper water at the end of the pier, Urchin Shrimps, Harlequin Crabs and frogfish. The pier has a lot to offer those who are willing to spend the time to look. It is a world-class macro dive and a great way to finish a day´s diving as its deepest depth is only about 49 feet.
The Shipwreck is a favorite among many divers as it is only 220 yards from the resort and has a maximum depth of 88 feet. This is an enjoyable yet simple dive, as the wreck sits on a sandy bottom at the base of a beautiful coral slope. Being nothing more than a burnt-out hulk, the attraction is not so much the wreck, but the marine life around it. With scorpionfish, Giant Clams, cuttlefish and Ribbon Eels, the wreck is always full of surprises.
If wall diving is your forte, then Blue Trigger Point may be what you are after. The clear, deep blue, nutrient-rich waters provide an excellent base for the gorgonian fans, black coral trees and soft corals to spread out their feeding polyps, and in turn give valuable shelter to myriad tiny animals. Ornate Ghost Pipefish, hawkfish, shrimps and crabs are all found here, as are scores of trevally, barracuda and vibrant fusiliers. On the reef top an abundance of Blue Triggerfish gives this site its name.
Dive at Raja Ampat Island
Raja Ampat is not really about rare critters or seeing sharks, there are generally not as many of what one would call – classic critters or big marine life. What is so special about this area is the scenery and in places the abundance of fish life. Dives where you are inundated with vast schools of fish, on the best of dives fish seem to block out the sun there are so many. Mellow drift dives across the most beautiful coral slopes and channels, unique dives with heavily undercut mushroom shaped islands with gorgeous coral growth virtually to the surface. Some of the best coral gardens we have seen are in this area.
Taking a live-aboard will allow you to see not just these great fish dives but also the topside highlights of this area too. The real “essence of Raja Ampat” is the incredible mix of wonderful topside scenery with great reefs to dive on. Another highlight of this area is taking rides on the tender boat through the most outstanding island scenery of any dive destination anywhere.

A great range of dive sites here makes this area stand out as being probably the best dive area in the whole of Indonesia for fish life. And not just for the species diversity; the schooling fish life is also incredible. Most reefs here are vibrant with vast amounts of soft corals covering huge coral outcrops that in turn are surrounded by thousands of small sweepers. There are critters as well, but not as many as in other areas, though for sure there are some great areas with rare and unusual marine life.
